A scheduled spacewalk in 2026 was canceled due to a medical issue on the ISS, highlighting NASA’s astronaut health procedures. To handle critical situations in orbit, crews rely on emergency spacecraft, telemedicine, onboard technology, and medical training.
When a “serious” medical problem forced the postponement of a 2026 ISS spacewalk and prompted contemplation of an early crew return, NASA’s astronaut health procedures were put to the test. According to the ESA, astronauts train in emergency treatment and use telemedicine to contact specialists on Earth because there are no physicians on board the International Space Station. Each crew is assigned a flight surgeon by NASA to supervise medical training and keep an eye on health prior to, during, and following missions.
Emergency Evacuation and Equipment
NASA claims that the ISS contains a sophisticated pharmacy and medical equipment that the personnel are trained to utilize. NASA therefore restricted the use of medication to help the astronaut survive the trip when one of the crew members developed a blood clot. In the event of an emergency involving on-board treatment, the crew will be able to undock and land on Earth, where flight surgeons and medics will be prepared to greet them upon splashdown. The visiting Soyuz or Crew Dragon capsules will serve as lifeboats.

Remote Medical Care and Training
Every crew that goes on the International Space Station (ISS) is assigned a dedicated space medicine physician (flight surgeon) by NASA. In addition to performing pre-flight medical examinations, these physicians are in charge of keeping an eye on the crew members’ health while they are on Earth. Each astronaut carries a bag including trauma kits and ultrasound equipment for use in medical crises, and they are all trained as medical responders. Through secure telemedicine links, crew members can contact the flight surgeon for any common health concerns. As astronaut Tom Marshburn put it, “We have the tools to do it.” This gives the astronauts all the equipment they require.
